Where you actually live

Eight lines, each one containing the last. Written the way you would write an address on an envelope, if the envelope had to reach you from anywhere.

Only used to write your address. It stays in this browser.

  1. Nadine

    about 1.7 metres

One of about eight billion people, on a planet none of them chose.

  2. Earth

    12,742 km across

Third rock from the Sun, and the only place in this entire address anyone has ever been born.

  3. The Solar System

about 15 billion km to the heliopause

One ordinary star, eight planets and a great deal of ice. Light from the Sun reaches you in eight minutes and twenty seconds.

  4. The Orion Arm

    10,000 light years long

A minor spur between two much larger spiral arms. We are about 26,000 light years out from the centre, which is the quiet suburbs.

  5. The Milky Way

    100,000 light years across

A barred spiral of a few hundred billion stars. You cannot photograph it from inside, so its shape was worked out by measuring where the stars are.

  6. The Local Group

    10 million light years across

About eighty galaxies held together by gravity. Two of them matter: ours, and Andromeda, which is coming this way.

  7. Laniakea

    520 million light years across

A supercluster of a hundred thousand galaxies, mapped in 2014 by watching which way everything is falling. The name is Hawaiian for immeasurable heaven.

  8. The observable universe

    93 billion light years across

Everything whose light has had time to reach here in 13.8 billion years. It is bigger than 13.8 billion light years because space has been stretching the whole while.

Each line is about a thousand times wider than the one above it. That is the only reason eight lines can reach from a bedroom to the edge of what can be seen.
